ICC T20 World Cup: Australia shocked by New Zealand

West Indies lost to Scotland and Ireland and the two-time World Champions got eliminated even before qualifying to Super12. Ireland and Zimbabwe qualified as Scotland did not win against Zimbabwe. Now, in the Super12 first match of ICC T20 World Cup, Australia has been shocking thrashed by New Zealand.

ICC T20 World Cup has become the home for surprises and shocking results. At the qualifying stage, West Indies lost to Scotland and Ireland and the two-time World Champions got eliminated even before qualifying to Super12. Ireland and Zimbabwe qualified as Scotland did not win against Zimbabwe. Now, in the Super12 first match of ICC T20 World Cup, Australia has been shocking thrashed by New Zealand.

Australia and New Zealand played against each other at Sydney on 22nd October. Australia won the toss and chose to field first. New Zealand batsmen Finn Allen (42) and Devon Coway came out with great purpose and slammed big Australian bowlers to all parts of the park. Finn Allen scored 42 runs off 16 balls and got out at 56/1 in 4.1 overs. Kane Williamson walked out to bat and he scored 23 runs from 23 balls rotating strike to give Devon Conway more balls to face. Both have put up 69 runs partnership in 8.5 overs. Conway carried on with Glenn Phillips (12) and James Neesham (26) hitting out Australian bowlers towards the death of the innings. Devon Conway stayed not out by scoring 92 runs in 58 balls. New Zealand scored 200/3 in 20 overs and gave ICC T20 World Cup, a great start.

Australia started their innings by losing David Warner (5) in the second over. Aaron Finch (13), Mitchell Marsh (16), Marcus Stoinis (7), Tim David (11), Matthew Wade (2) fell cheaply and Australia managed to score only 82 runs in 12.2 overs. Soon, Glenn Maxwell (28) fell with 89 runs on board in 13.3 overs. Pat Cummins (21) tried to restore some respect to famed Australia batting line-up by pushing the score above 100. Australia got bundled out for 111 in 17.1 overs. Tim Southee (3/6) made an impact in his 2.1 overs. Mitchell Santner (3/31) ripped benefits off the tight bowling by the pacers like Trent Boult (1/24), Lockie Ferguson (1/20). Ish Sodhi (1/29) too could restrict Australia big hitters through-out the chase. Devon Conway for his 92 runs off 58 balls got Player of the Match, award.

Australia will find it tough to progress in ICC T20 World Cup after such a huge defeat as they have already been pushed to bottom of the table. Their NRR (-4.450) has pushed them below Ireland (-2.467) and Afghanistan (-0.620) in the Group 1 after every team has played one match, each. And ICC T20 World Cup has just started.
