MS Dhoni is one of most famous cricketers and bonafide legends of Indian, International Cricket. He has been driving spectators to IPL matches in thousands from past two seasons. He has decided to play one more season, IPL 2024, after winning his 5th title as CSK captain in IPL. He injured his knee in 2023 and played despite pain throughout. He got his knee surgery and after being in recovery for 6-8 months, he came back to play in 2024.
CSK wanted him to continue for 2024 before Mega Auction for 2025. He has decided to play this season and smoothly let the captaincy transfer to Ruturaj Gaikwad. He failed to do so with Ravindra Jadeja in 2022 and he did not want to repeat the same in 2024. He did send indications of this season being his final but he is also not preferring to bat for 4 or 5 overs in this season.
In the previous match against PBKS, he let Shardul Thakur bat above him and got bowled on first ball. He looked uncomfortable while keeping and many experts started questioning his inclusion in the team. CSK management has revealed that MS Dhoni has been injured and playing despite that. He is facing leg muscle tear and hence, he needs rest to recover.
But he has been forced to continue to play due to depleted resources of CSK. Devon Conway could have been first wicket keeper in the absence of MS Dhoni but due to his unavailability, MSD is forced to play every match. Even in practice sessions, MS Dhoni is unable to run at his best. With IPL nearing end and teams looking at qualification to playoffs, CSK might just need MSD to pull off a miracle and guide them through once again.
