Indian Chess Player Divya Deshmukh talks about facing sexism

Indian Chess Player, Divya Deshmukh, stated that she was disappointed for facing sexism at Tata Steel Masters event conducted at Wijk Aan Zee, Netherlands. She stated that people or viewers have discussed and concentrated on her appearance, hair and clothes and even her accent rather than the game.

She stated that she was upset and waited for the tournament to be over to talk about this issue. She took issue to people not focusing on game played by Women Chess Players or women in sports events and concentrating on their looks. In her slightly lengthy and detailed note, she talked about how she wishes for change in viewers’ attitude when they are watching women playing sports.

It is alarming to say that an 18-year old feels such way that she is being objectified even though she is not consenting for it. In glamour industry, women do willingly wear certain clothes and even that doesn’t give any one any right to look upon them. It is unfair to make a player feel in such a way rather than think about their game and improve it.

Divya Deshmukh as ended at 12th place in Challengers league and that is impressive. While we talk about not seeing many women coming forward to represent our country in sports. we need first stop objectifying every women and change the gaze. We hope many more voice out their disappointment like young Divya, did.
