Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja Dominating Netflix

Maharaja

Vijay Sethupathi’s film Maharaja has topped the list of the most-watched movies on Netflix this year. Although its popularity initially grew slowly, OTT platforms surged during the COVID-19 pandemic. These platforms gained traction not only because they directly released new films but also due to the high prices for digital rights to movies released in theaters. As a result, most new films now appear on OTT platforms within a month of their theatrical release, making it easier for those who cannot watch films in theaters to enjoy them.

Netflix, a leader in the OTT space, recently shared details about the most-watched films on its platform this year. According to the list, Hindi films dominate, occupying 9 out of the top 10 spots, while the Tamil film Maharaja claims the top position.

Maharaja stands as the only South Indian film on the list, boasting 18.6 million viewers. A Hindi remake follows with 17.9 million views. Other films in the top five include Lapata Ladies, Shaitan, starring Jyotika, and Fighter, featuring Hrithik Roshan in third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively. Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna, ranks sixth, while Shah Rukh Khan’s film holds the eighth position.

Director Nithin brought Maharaja to life, marking Vijay Sethupathi’s 50th film, which released in June. The movie features an impressive cast, including Anurag Kashyap, Nataraj, Abhirami, and Singambuli in lead roles. The film has also grossed over Rs 100 crore at the box office.
