Umrao Jaan returns to cinemas tomorrow after 44 years

Umrao Jaan

The timeless classic Umrao Jaan (1981), directed by Muzaffar Ali and starring Rekha in one of her most celebrated roles, is all set to return to theatres on June 27. The film, which tells the story of a courtesan in 19th-century Lucknow, has become a cherished part of Indian cinema, admired for its poetry, music, and graceful storytelling.

Ahead of its re-release, Ali has also launched a luxury coffee-table book that offers a deeper look into the film’s creation and legacy. “The film has so many layers,” Ali said in an interview with India Today. “We don’t realise them until we bring everything together in one place. The book captures the spirit of that time, the effort behind the film, and the vanishing culture of Awadh.”

Now 44 years old, Umrao Jaan continues to strike a chord with audiences across generations. Ali hopes the new release will introduce the film to younger viewers and rekindle its magic for older fans. “I’m both nervous and excited,” he said. “This is a big experiment, but I believe it will connect with people again.”

Ali also revealed that he has preserved a large collection of clothing and artefacts from the film, stored in over 40 trunks. He dreams of one day turning them into a museum in his village. “Each item carries a story,” he shared.

The re-release also serves as a tribute to the late Kathak maestro Kumudini Lakhia, whose choreography brought elegance and emotion to Rekha’s performances. Ali fondly recalled her contribution, saying she brought a special depth to the songs through her expressive dance style.

With restored visuals and timeless music, Umrao Jaan is ready to enchant audiences once again.
