Vishal has been trying to give action entertainers with different directors. His recent film Mark Antony has become a blockbuster in Tamil but failed in Telugu. He has now joined hands with his Thamarabharani and Poojai director Hari for another film, Rathnam. Movie released on 26th April amidst some issues and controversies due to Vishal’s interviews. Is Vishal able to find the much needed blockbuster in both Tamil and Telugu languages with this one? Let’s discuss further.
Plot:
A MLA Paneer Selvam(Samuthirakani)’s right hand man goon Rathnam(Vishal) gets attracted to Janani(Priya Bhavani Shankar). He keeps following her and saves her from goons, one time. Later, he keeps encountering such goons regularly as they want to Kabza, a land owned by her. As he tries to save her he finds some secrets about his past too. What are they? How did he solve all issues? Watch the movie to know more.
Analysis:
Vishal has been able to understand director Hari’s wavelength and performed according to the script. He performed well in action stunts and emotional scenes. But the script and writing are so outdated and over the top that you don’t really connect with anything. Hero character seems to have been derived from many previous films of the director and other hit commercial films.
Hari always used to find something unique characters for his leads but this time he went with regular stuff. Priya Bhavani did her best to appeal in the weak character written for her. Rest all others just needed to do their regular stuff and nothing special or unique that makes this film fresh. This seems to be Hari’s desperate attempt to give a hit and it all looked like he tried everything to see what sticks.
Screenplay is so routine and predictable that you don’t care for the random fights or chasing sequences. It almost seems like the director just believed in those sequences rather than the strong emotions that he used to excel at. Had he tried to create much better world and characters, this movie Rathnam would have really been an enjoyable fare. But it fails in all aspects including editing and Devi Sri Prasad’s music.
Positives:
Vishal’s performance
Priya Bhavani Shankar’s performance
Two action sequences
Negatives:
Pacing issues
Too many plot holes
Problematic Themes
Too many action sequences
Unconvincing Climax
Rathnam Movie Bottom-line: Hari Over-cooks again
