Dhanush has become one of the most celebrated movie stars of Indian Cinema. He even starred in International films and now, he is venturing into direction as well, regularly. The multifaceted actor, also writer-director has reached 50 films milestone. He wrote & directed his 50th film, Raayan himself with AR Rahman’s music. The movie released worldwide on 26th July and let’s discuss more in detail.
Plot:
Karthavaraayan known as Raayan(Dhanush) prays for a sister and even names her Durga(Dushara Vijayan). His brothers Muthuvelraayan aka Muthu(Sundeep Kishan) and Manickyavelraayan aka Manickyam(Kalidas Jayaram) have issues with his serious face. But they respect him for signing his entire life for them. Muthu doesn’t have any goal in life and he is highly restless. Manickyam is studying in college while Durga quits college.
Raayan runs a fast-food food truck in North Madras and he has a connection with Local don Durai. On the other hand, Durai has a longtime enimity with Sethuraman(SJ Suryah) another big don. One day, due to Muthu, Raayan is forced to involve in Durai vs Sethu clash. How does he navigate through the issues these dons bring into his life forms the rest of the story.
Analysis:
Dhanush has proven his skills has an absolutely great actor in his many films. While he is most sought after for typical films like Vada Chennai, Aadukalam, Asuran he made Raayan that fits his image. As his 50th film, he choose a very simple time tested storyline but executed it with a strong technical prowess. His visual sense and emotional eye with short scenes is quite unique.
But the narrative is slow and at the same time, twists don’t land with same emotional impact as they should. Dushara Vijayan does land the emotional drama very well but writing needed to support her skills, some more. Sundeep Kishan’s performance and his character are X-factor in this film. He has been given a great chance to shine and he used it well.
SJ Suryah, Kalidas Jayaram also carried the portions given to them. Raayan stands out because of the performances and also due to AR Rahman’s music. The songs and BGM are the legend’s best work in recent times. Aparna Balamurali and Selvaraghavan also register strongly. In such an ensemble film, every actor should out with several moments.
Om Prakash visuals and editing by GK Prasanna also do the needful for the film. The writing and narrative could have been better for the emotional impact to be even higher. Raayan works with all its issues as a gangster drama flick with an angel being wrongly identified as a demon.
Positives:
Dhanush’s performance
His executional ability
AR Rahman’s music
Technical brilliance
Negatives:
Predictable story
Slightly slow narrative
Twists don’t land with emotional high
Low emotional impact
Raayan Movie Bottom-line: Watchable Gangster Flick
