R. Narayana Murthy: From struggling actor to voice of the masses

R Narayana Murthy is a name that needs little introduction to Telugu audiences. Known as the “People’s Comrade” of Telugu cinema, he carved a niche for himself with revolutionary films that spoke for the downtrodden. While many filmmakers adapted with changing times, R Narayana Murthy has remained true to his ideology, using cinema as a medium to raise his voice for social justice.

What many may not know is that Murthy initially stepped into the industry with dreams of becoming a mainstream hero. With just ₹70 in hand, he travelled to Chennai, only to discover that thousands of hopefuls were already waiting for their turn in the spotlight. He began his journey as a junior artiste, gradually building connections with legends such as Bapu and Dasari Narayana Rao. His natural talent and dedication quickly earned him recognition.

Murthy once approached Dasari seeking an acting role. Dasari, however, asked him to complete his degree first and return. True to his word, Murthy went back with his degree certificate, and Dasari offered him a role in the film Needa, starring Krishna’s son. Murthy played the second lead in that film and went on to act in several others — but not as a hero.

This realisation prompted him to take matters into his own hands. Determined to create the kind of cinema he believed in, he launched his own production house, Sneha Chitra Pictures, with the support of close friends. His debut film as producer-director-actor, Ardharatri Swatantram, turned out to be a milestone, bringing him immense recognition.

From then on, Narayana Murthy never looked back. His films became synonymous with social awareness, focusing on the struggles and aspirations of the poor and marginalised. More than just cinema, they became a voice for those who rarely found representation on screen.

Today, R. Narayana Murthy is celebrated not only as an actor and filmmaker but also as a cultural figure who gave revolutionary cinema a permanent place in Telugu film history. His journey from a struggling junior artiste to a people’s voice remains an inspiration for generations.
