Sri Lanka, one of the big teams in World Cricket, got eliminated from T20 World Cup 2024 in Group stage. After their major cricketers retired, the team has found it difficult to have similar impact like earlier. The team had to play qualification tournament to become a part of the World Cup. Now, they became first regular nation to be eliminated.
In Group D, many expected Sri Lanka to qualify along with South Africa. But it turned out to be unlikely, when they lost to Bangladesh in a close contest. In their first group match, they lost to South Africa and then they needed to post a big win against Bangladesh.
Contrary to that, they lost to their Asian Neighbours and archrivals in a very close encounter. Now, their third Group match against Nepal had been abandoned due to rain on 11th June without a ball being bowled. Nepal fans wanted to see their team taking on their neighbor and an Asian Giant.
But the fans did not get their wish. Sri Lanka will now face Netherlands in their final Group match and would try to win it with a big margin. For their future, they need a big win playing as a team. Well, a world cup winner, 2014 and two time finalist – 2009 & 2012 got eliminated in group stage. Sri Lanka cricket needs to introspect big time after this tournament.
