Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has disclosed that she is currently suffering from arthritis. She revealed that the intense pain has made it difficult for her to practice, and she may decide on retirement by the end of this year. “I have knee pain and can’t train for long periods. Two hours of training isn’t sufficient to compete at the highest level. I am concerned about how retirement will impact me, but it’s a possibility I must consider. The career of an athlete is naturally short. I started my career at the age of 9 and will turn 35 next year. I am proud of representing my country for so long. Competing in the Olympics is a dream for many, and reaching that level requires years of hard work. However, if the body doesn’t cooperate, I may have to let go of that dream,” Saina explained.

Nehwal has competed in three Olympic Games, working tirelessly to reach that level. As a top athlete, she has faced significant expectations from coaches, family, and friends, all of whom hope for strong performances. “You have to manage the pressure and continue performing well. Since an athlete’s career is short, it’s important not to take long breaks. To become an international champion, tough decisions must be made and consistent performance is crucial,” she added.
Saina Nehwal achieved significant milestones, including winning a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics, becoming the first Indian shuttler to win an Olympic medal. She also won gold medals at the 2010 and 2018 Commonwealth Games.
