Indian Union Government notifies CAA rules before Parliament Elections

Indian Union Government has decided to amend Indian Citizenship Act 1955 with Citizenship Amendment Act, CAA bill. They have introduced this amendment to give citizenship to minorites of neighbouring countries persecuted on religious grounds. As citizens belonging to different communities other than Musilim community are treated as minorities.

Indian government has decided to offer citizenship to those refugees, who have illegally migrated to India, on the grounds of religion with this amendment. Home Minister Amit Shah has introduced the CAA bill in 2019 in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. After the bill has been passed in parliament, President of India has also accepted the bill and gave permission to implement it.

Union Government took their own time to draw rules for CAA. After careful deliberation, the Union Government has released the rules notification in 2024 on 11th March. Releasing the CAA notification on social media, Home Minister Amit Shah wrote, “The Modi government today notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024. ”

He further wrote, “These rules will now enable minorities persecuted on religious grounds in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to acquire citizenship in our nation. With this notification PM Shri @narendramodi Ji has delivered on another commitment and realised the promise of the makers of our constitution to the Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians living in those countries.”

The timing of this notification has become a huge topic of discussion on social media. As the notification for Parliament elections are due, releasing CAA notification and announcing its implementation has become quite sensational. Well, for the refugees who have been waiting for this bill to be implemented this is a great news.

The process will be completed online for the people seeking Indian Citizenship who have been living in India for more than 14 years or hold a property in India from past 12 months, who have entered as refugees or illegal migrants. The qualification for them would be based on their religion. Union Government has clearly stated that it won’t snatch the citizenship of any religious community people living in India as Indian citizens, till date.
