Fishing season begins in Krishna District as ban ends

Fishing

Fishing activity has restarted across Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh following the end of the 61-day annual ban, which aims to protect fish and prawns during their breeding period. The restriction was lifted at midnight on 14 June, and by Sunday morning, boats had started returning to the sea.
The district has 23 fish landing spots, including the busy Gilakaladindi Harbour, which are now active again with fishermen, traders, and buyers. However, many fishermen are waiting for a traditional auspicious time, or muhurtham, before setting out, after performing rituals for safety and good luck.

According to New Indian Express report, there are about 2,270 registered boats in the district: 2,131 motorised, 73 non-motorised, and 66 mechanised, providing work to nearly 13,789 people. The return to fishing brought relief to families who faced financial strain during the two-month break.
The Andhra Pradesh government gave ₹20,000 each to eligible fishermen under the Matsyakara Bharosa scheme, helping over 13,000 people in the district.

The money was directly transferred into their bank accounts. A fuel subsidy of ₹9 per litre is also being provided, up to 300 litres for motorised boats and 3,000 litres for mechanised ones. The Fisheries Department has issued fresh safety guidance for crews returning to sea. With spiritual traditions followed and support measures in place, coastal communities are now looking forward to a better season.
