Yodha Movie Rating: 2.5/5

Sidharth Malhotra has delivered a surprisingly good film with Shershaah. His performance got huge critical praise and he has decided to make such action films with army personnel as the main protagonist. After playing a cop in Indian Police Force, he has come up with Yodha, playing an army officer. Raashii Khanna and Disha Patani are playing leading lady roles in the film and Karan Johar, director Shashank Khaitan have produced the film. Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha directed the film. Movie released on 15th March and let’s discuss about it in detail.

Plot:
Arun Katyal(Sidharth Malhotra) boards on a flight that is hijacked by several militants. His wife Priyamvada “Priya” Katyal(Raashii Khanna) waits for his return but she gots to know that the flight has been hijacked. She fears for his safety knowing how he has short-temper. His father Major Surender Katyal(Ronit Roy) forms a regiment in Army and names it “Yodha”. Arun is a part of the regiment but due to his temperament he has been suspended. Now, he has to save hostages on flight and kill the militants with the help of Stewardess Laila(Disha Patani). Watch movie to know more.

Analysis:
Hollywood has come up with many action dramas with hijacked plane plotlines. Liam Neeson, Gerard Butler and several others have been doing such action thrillers from time to time. Majorly, this film seems to have been inspired from “Non-Stop” and “Olympus Has Fallen” films. The action sequences and several character moments closely resemble those films, too. The main protagonist and antagonists’ showdown scenes feel similar to many other movies as well. The director duo has tried their best to keep the screenplay move at brisk pace and engaging.

But they have failed with overtly predictable second hour. While they thought the action sequences should be major highlight of the film they should have come up with interesting characters too. The characters almost become caricatures and the use of “Yodha” doesn’t seem perfect for this mission. With action being slick and stylish, we needed more scenes that add to the intensity in the drama. Rather audiences end up being fatigued with scene after scene that leads to predictable conclusion.

Sidharth Malhotra is good in action sequences. He did not get much material to showcase his acting skills. He managed to deliver a spirited performance but his star presence is not enough to carry this kind of a film on his shoulders. Raashii Khanna has been used for songs and few close up shots. Major portion has been given to Disha Patani but her character is too caricatured for us to take her seriously. Others did their best.

On the whole, movie offers good action sequences but fails to engage us throughout. Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha delivered good visuals with Cinematographer Jishnu Bhattacharjee. Editing could have been better and music leaves us underwhelmed. Movie with such empahsis on delivering good action failed to real come up with engaging screenplay.
