SP Charan moves to court against Tharun Bhascker

Keedaa Cola makers face legal case for using SP Balu voice with AI without permission

Innovation in Technology, to be precise development in AI, has allowed many enthusiasts to use popular actors, singers and celebrities faces, voices to create their own videos. You might have seen many people on social media platform using AI to produce troll videos and recreate some songs in their favorite singer voices and scenes in favorite actors’ acting style.

This has been growing as a trend and producers from Hollywood to Indian Film Industry are looking to use AI for recreating major yesteryear legendary actors and singers’ voices.Recently, many objected for legendary music composer AR Rahman for using AI to recreate voices of known singers for his new movie song.

He used singers Bombay Bakya and Shahul Hameed voices for his Lal Salaam song and he stated that he used AI for their voices after getting required permissions, to do so. He opined that it is not a gimmick and they should use AI only when it is absolute necessity and permitted.

Now, singer-actor-producer and son of legendary singer SP Balasubramanyam, SP Charan has taken legal action on director Tharun Bhascker. He went to court as the young director Tharun did not ask permission to use SP Balu’s family permission to recreate his voice using AI and use for a song in his recent film, Keedaa Cola.

SP Charan is demanding an unconditional apology, one crore rupees for damages and a share in a royalty of the song as well. Copyright laws have been put in place by music composers and singers to get their share of royalty from producers and music labels, who could misuse their contribution without their proper permission. So, SP Charan has gone to court following those copyright laws.

As many composers could go in this route of using AI without permission and singers’ knowledge, this case will help others to know the real depth of copyright laws. Well, Tharun Bhascker still did not respond about this matter and hope, he will not drag this matter too much and end it amicably.
