Sekhar Kammula’s Kuberaa: A masterclass in thoughtful filmmaking

Sekhar Kuberaa

Director Sekhar Kammula is no stranger to unique storytelling, but with Kuberaa, he has once again proven why he stands apart in Telugu cinema. Known for films like Happy Days and Life Is Beautiful, Kammula’s latest project blends fresh ideas, layered characters, and a deep sense of realism, showing that his approach to cinema is anything but conventional.

What makes Kuberaa special isn’t just its story or performances; it’s the care taken in every element, from costume design to scene setting. Take, for example, the film’s diverse characters: four beggars from different parts of India – Tirupati, Kerala, Kolkata, and Assam, each with their own background and dress style. Costume designer Kavya Sriram, after intensive research, ensured that every piece of clothing reflected regional traditions and personal struggle.

In one scene, actor Dhanush emerges from a forest soaked and covered in mud. It may look effortless on screen, but days of preparation went into creating the right look, with added texture and real wear on the clothing. The dump yard set, another challenge, was constructed with incredible attention to detail, so convincing that audiences assumed it was shot on location.

Assistant director of Kuberaa, Amulya, shared how Sekhar Kammula’s process involves endless refining. Even after a shot is “OK’d”, he often pushes for subtle improvements that can transform the entire scene. His calm, democratic approach on set creates space for ideas, no matter where they come from.

Kuberaa is not just a film; it’s a lesson in how passion, patience, and precision can elevate cinema. With Kammula’s signature touch, even small moments feel big, and that’s what sets him apart.
