In 2023, Hindi Cinema saw few huge blockbusters and hits that reiterated the fact that audiences will watch good movies. Shah Rukh Khan has been able to drive audiences to theatres with three big films and two of them have become 500 crores Nett grossers in India and 1000 crore grossers, worldwide. His Pathaan released on 25th January and became a huge blockbuster amidst boycotts.
Post Pathaan, The Kerala Story, Gadar 2, OMG 2, Jawan, Animal have become huge blockbusters while Dunki became a Hit. So, when Pathaan director Siddharth Anand announced his next big action film with Hrithik Roshan, Fighter, many thought he will again score a blockbuster. He released the film on 25th January, 2024.
Deepika Padukone and Anil Kapoor have also been part of the film. The movie had aerial action sequences, a first for Indian Cinema and also a slightly exaggerated portrayal of Indian Air Force missions. The movie theme has been designed around Balkot Air Strikes and rescue of Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman who got captured by Pakistani Army after his MIG-21 strike down.
The movie received positive reviews but marketing campaign did not have solid impact. It drove audiences to the theatres for extended Republic Day weekend and collected over 100 crores Nett in India but crashed on Monday with 8 crores Nett collections. Movie has shocked many Box office experts with such a crash. It’s revival, now depends on aggressive marketing push but B and C centres seem to have no interest.
