V C Sajjanar, Commissioner of Police in Hyderabad (CP), has issued a firm warning to the public to steer clear of websites and links offering free movie downloads. He cautioned that such offers are often deceptive traps set by cybercriminals aiming to infiltrate devices and steal personal information.
In his advisory, Sajjanar highlighted that many illegal websites promoting free access to films are embedded with harmful software. Once a user clicks on these links or downloads content, hidden malware can silently install itself, allowing scammers to gain access to sensitive data such as bank details, passwords, photos, and contact lists.
He explained that cybercriminals exploit curiosity and the popularity of newly released films to entice users, particularly young people and entertainment seekers. These fraudulent schemes can lead to identity theft, financial loss, or even blackmail.
Sajjanar strongly advised citizens to avoid downloading content from unverified sources and to rely only on authorised streaming platforms. He also urged internet users to be conscious of their digital habits by using secure passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and keeping antivirus protection up to date.
The CP Sajjanar further reminded the public that downloading pirated content is not only unsafe but also illegal. He emphasised that what may seem like a shortcut to free entertainment could actually expose users to serious cyber risks.
Residents were encouraged to report any suspicious links, websites, or cyber fraud incidents through the national helpline 1930 or via the official cybercrime reporting portal. Prompt reporting, he said, helps authorities track offenders and protect others from falling victim.
Sajjanar concluded by stressing that digital safety begins with awareness and caution, and urged everyone to treat online security with the same seriousness as physical safety.
