Commercial films are proving their strength once again in the Telugu film industry. Directors Anil Ravipudi, Gopichand Malineni and Bobby Kolli are leading the way, showing that mass entertainers still have a solid place in Tollywood despite the rise of experimental cinema.

This year’s Sankranti season is the best example. Several big films with huge expectations were released, but it was ‘Sankranthiki Vasthunnam’ — a simple commercial entertainer — that became a surprise blockbuster. It had no major buzz, yet it pulled audiences to theatres and proved the power of mass appeal.

These three directors have often faced criticism for making “routine” films. Many say they don’t experiment with new ideas. But the trio doesn’t take such talk seriously. Anil Ravipudi once stated that every filmmaker has their own style and that his films work because people enjoy them. He made it clear that he doesn’t need complex logic — as long as his formula works, he will keep making these films.

Gopichand Malineni and Bobby are also known for delivering action-packed, emotional commercial stories. They are seen as reliable hitmakers who understand what the mass audience wants. Even when Anil tries something slightly different, he still keeps the commercial core intact with smart storytelling.

Meanwhile, directors like S. S. Rajamouli, Sukumar, Chandoo Mondeti, Prashanth Neel, Prasanth Varma and Buchi Babu Sana are exploring fresh and unique ideas that appeal to Pan-India audiences.

This shows two clear paths in Tollywood — commercial entertainers and new-age concept films. Both are important. While experimental films push creative boundaries, commercial blockbusters keep the industry strong at the box office. Anil, Gopichand and Bobby stand as the solid backup, ensuring mass films continue to bring in big numbers, proving they are still a key force in Telugu cinema.
