Amar Singh Chamkila Movie Rating: 3/5

Punjab has been blessed with many independent singers and artists who have pushed the envelope of traditional music all over India and world. Major pop stars have risen from this land and Punjabis have a special liking towards music and fine arts. Still, as a society, we do not understand and encourage “freedom of speech” for same independent artists. Amar Singh Chamkila is a tragic real life story of a hugely popular independent singer from Punjab. Imtiaz Ali has decided to make a film on the singer’s life. Let’s dive into discussion about the film.

Plot:
The movie tracks the life of singer and song writer Amar Singh Chamkila(Diljit Dosanjh). Amar Singh becomes a highly popular singer but the lyrics he writes for his songs become controversial. Due to some vulgar words and double meaning innuendos, people turn against him. So, what happens in his life and how, is the plot of the movie. Watch the movie to know more.

Analysis:
Imtiaz Ali after many forgettable outings post Tamasha has made a huge comeback with this one. The way he integrates music with screenplay is as good as Rockstar. His screenplay using real life incidents for dramatic highs and lows works pretty well. Diljit Dosanjh’s performance adds to the screenplay prowess and execution of the ace director. The way he brings in all the perspectives of various people connected to Amar Singh Chamkila’s life works excellently.

Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra from Amar Singh Chamkila

Diljit Dosanjh has given a very sincere performance in this role. He seems to have great respect to the deceased singer and it shows in his body language and dialogue delivery. He worked hard to showcase difference from his other performances to this one. Also, his voice also became a plus for the songs. Parineeti Chopra after a long time showcased her acting skills to perfection. As a female singer from 1980’s, she showcased great ease in her body language and nailed the expressions to the tee. All others also did their best as performers.

AR Rahman’s music and back ground score added layers to exciting screenplay. His music filled in some voids and also gave the movie, a significant flow like none other. He is in great form while scoring back ground tracks as well in this film. Imtiaz Ali has been strong technically from his first movie and this one is no exception. Few issues with pacing in the second hour could have been avoided by the makers. Still, this film works as mirror for objections that our society has for “freedom of speech” and how easily people resort to violence to silence someone.
