Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has recently made a significant statement about the future of Pakistan cricket. Kaneria believes that the team needs a tough, decisive coach like Gautam Gambhir to address the ongoing issues within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Despite a period of strong performance across all formats over the past few months, the team has faced setbacks, including an early exit from the T20 World Cup and recent struggles in Test matches.
The PCB has been active in its coaching appointments, bringing in Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie as the limited-overs and Test coaches, respectively. However, Kaneria has criticized the board’s approach, arguing that frequent changes in captaincy and a lack of consistent leadership are undermining the team’s performance.

Kaneria expressed his views on the matter, stating, “The Pakistan Cricket Board needs to address its approach to captaincy and leadership. The team’s performance is suffering due to the constant rotation of captains and the inability to develop effective leadership. It is crucial to stick with one captain for a set period. If I were in charge, I would give a captain one year to prove their capability. If they do not perform within that timeframe, I would ask them to step down. Tough decisions are necessary to bring about real change.”
Kaneria also contrasted the situation with other cricket teams, noting, “Look at how other teams are performing. The Indian team, for instance, has recently experienced a loss in a Test series to Bangladesh, but their approach remains consistent. Currently, Rahul Dravid is the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Gautam Gambhir, a fantastic cricketer and a strong personality, would bring the kind of leadership Pakistan needs. The PCB should adopt a similarly assertive stance, making bold decisions without succumbing to external pressures.”
Kaneria’s comments highlight the need for strong, consistent leadership in Pakistan cricket to address the current challenges and improve the team’s performance on the international stage.
