Joe Root on Sachin’s Record: ‘My Focus Is Not on Milestones’

Joe Root

In the realm of Test cricket, Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs is under threat, with England’s Joe Root positioned as a strong contender to surpass it. Currently, Root is just 70 runs away from becoming the highest run-scorer for England, having amassed 12,402 runs in 146 Test matches. He trails only Alastair Cook, who holds the record with 12,472 runs. Tendulkar’s remarkable tally stands at 15,921 runs, making him the all-time leading run-scorer in Test cricket. Among active players, Root is the closest to achieving this milestone, with other prominent cricketers like Steve Smith (9,685 runs), Virat Kohli (8,947 runs), and Kane Williamson (8,881 runs) significantly behind.

Despite being on the verge of breaking records, Root has emphasized that he does not focus on personal milestones. Instead, he values his contributions to England’s victories above all else. “I’ve never been one to think about milestones. What matters is how I contribute to the team’s success,” Root stated. The England team is set to embark on a crucial three-match Test series against Pakistan starting Monday, which is vital for their hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final.

Root elaborated on his mindset: “While it’s important to score runs, we should evaluate ourselves based on how we perform in key matches. My passion lies in contributing to England’s victories, which drives me forward. I play with this mentality, allowing me to thrive in various situations.” He also mentioned his love for Test cricket and his desire to continue playing for as long as possible. “People often ask how long I intend to play. As long as I can, I will represent my team in Tests. There’s a strong bond with the squad, and we enjoy each other’s company both on and off the field. I will continue to work hard to play my part in the team’s successes,” Root concluded.

As the series against Pakistan approaches, all eyes will be on Root as he aims not only to make history but also to lead England to victory.
