Indian Government has banned these OTT platforms for obscene content

India saw huge surge in OTT platforms looking to attract subscribers who have been willing to watch content on their mobile phones, laptops and LED screens, TVs with digital revolution. The traditional broadcasting channels and theatres have been forced to limit their exhibition with the pandemic and this helped the surge.

While Netflix, Disney Plus Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, ZEE5, SonyLiv have been offering varied content there are multiple platforms that offer adult and obscene content as well. Several OTT platforms have crossed the limit in producing such content encouraging pornographic visuals. ALTT, ULLU have been playing with the edgy content continuously.

Minister of Information & Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur, has talked about the growing ‘vulgar and obscene content’ in OTT platforms. Now, the ministry has decided to act on his word and banned 19 websites, 10 apps and 57 social media accounts associated with these OTT platforms.

Press Release from I&B ministry has stated, “The OTT platforms have been banned for the prima facie violation of Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.”
