Amazon MX Player’s bold and clever marketing strategy for the new web series First Copy has garnered attention by directly tackling the issue of digital piracy. The show, a gritty drama about the world of content theft, created online buzz and conversation when it debuted with a campaign that blurred the lines between fact and fiction.
Fans were confused when the campaign began with a phony “leak” of the series on Telegram. Then, in what appeared to be a pirated video, a staged clip with comedian-turned-actor Munawar Faruqui in character speaking directly to the audience. He then reveals the truth, which is that the video was a part of a campaign to discourage people from watching pirated content.
He explained that First Copy represents the struggles of many people in creative industries and urged audiences to support original content.
Later, Faruqui gave a moving monologue in which he likened piracy to the actual experience of someone stealing your hard work.
“Piracy doesn’t just steal a film or a show; it steals time, dreams, and dignity,” Faruqui said. “If even a few people choose to stream content legally because of this campaign, we’ve done our job.”
First Copy marks Munawar Faruqui’s digital acting debut and stars him as Arif, a mastermind behind piracy. The series also features Krystle D’Souza, Gulshan Grover, Saqib Ayub, Ashi Singh, Meiyang Chang, Inam Ul Haq, and Raza Murad.
Available to stream for free, First Copy is not only drawing viewers but also sparking an important conversation around the value of creativity and the need to respect the people behind it.
