Online content, poor oversight linked to rise in rapes: MP Police

The head of Madhya Pradesh police has said that police work alone cannot stop the rising number of rape cases in the state. He believes wider social issues, including digital exposure and weak family supervision, are playing a major role.

After a meeting in Ujjain on Saturday, the state’s Director General of Police (DGP), Kailash Makwana, spoke to the media. He said that the growing use of mobile phones and internet access has changed how people interact. He also said that children are seeing more harmful material online, which may be affecting their thinking. Other problems, such as alcohol use and lack of parental control, are also contributing factors.

The police chief added that children are no longer getting the same guidance at home or school as before. Families are finding it harder to monitor what young people are doing. He said that this lack of attention, along with the spread of adult content, is leading to moral decline in society.

Recent government figures show a sharp increase in rape cases in Madhya Pradesh. In 2020, there were 6,134 reported cases. That number has risen to 7,294 in 2024, a jump of 19 percent. Officials also said that, on average, 20 rape cases are now being reported each day in the state.

The DGP’s comments follow national concern over a recent gang-rape case in Kolkata involving a law student. That incident has sparked protests and debate across the country about women’s safety and the need for stronger action.

Makwana’s remarks highlight a growing concern that crime prevention must involve not only law enforcement but also changes in how families and society deal with technology and behaviour.
