The ongoing war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have triggered a global oil crisis, sending fuel prices soaring worldwide. Petrol, diesel, and jet fuel costs have risen sharply, impacting airlines across the globe. In response, Air India has announced an increase in fuel surcharges on both domestic and international routes, with the burden falling directly on passengers.
The revised surcharges will take effect from April 8 on domestic routes and from April 10 on international routes, including flights to the United States and Europe. The airline stated that surcharges will vary depending on distance:
Domestic routes:
*Up to 500 km – ₹299
*Above 2000 km – ₹899
International routes:
*North America & Australia – $280 (approx. ₹23,000+)
*Europe – $205 (approx. ₹17,000)
*Southeast Asia – $100
*West Asia – $50
Air India explained that the steep rise in jet fuel prices is the primary driver behind the surcharge hike. Jet fuel, which cost $99.40 per barrel, surged to $195.19 per barrel by March. Despite the surcharge increase, the airline admitted that the additional fees will not fully offset the higher fuel costs, particularly on long-haul international routes.
The airline emphasized that the global energy security crisis caused by the Iran conflict and the disruption of oil transport through the Strait of Hormuz has severely strained operations, forcing carriers worldwide to adjust fares.
