The Bear Season 3 Rating: 2.5/5

The Bear has won major awards and post Shameless pushed Jeremy Allen White to Superstar status. After the first two seasons, the anticipation for Season 3 has been higher than ever. With the occasional drama and occasional comedy format attributing to its grand success, many wanted the Season 3 to place it among must watch series of recent times. So, let’s discuss about the new season in detail.

While the past two seasons have strongly established Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto(Jeremy Allen White) ambitions to open his own restaurant, The Bear. But in this one, the plot doesn’t really move at the same pace as in the previous ones. Even the writing feels a little bit too convenient at places. Jokes turn unfunny and the narrative looses its grip over uninteresting sub-plots. The character driven humor that worked to an extent in previous seasons, also doesn’t become a saviour for the series in this season.

Several characters have been side-lined at the cost of these sub-plots too. Also, the season doesn’t give a feeling of an entirety and feels like the story has been left untouched for another season. The filler episodes does take away the intensity that has been established in first and second episode. Some highly interesting ideas have been left under explored for already commissioned Season 4. One feels the story of The Bear could have been written better for a fulfilling viewing experience to last for both the seasons.

Although performances are again spot on, the slapstick comic portions do not really work as well they should. Also, they feel out-of-place as the series lend into the situations that shine out humor, previously. This season gives us a feeling that the writers wanted to prolong the goal that they have set out for the characters to both the seasons. Rather had they planned both differently and connected ably, The Bear season 3 would have further increased our anticipation for the next one.

In totality, we are not obliged to watch Season 4 if you just watch this Season 3. For fans of this series, Season 4 would be an interesting opportunity to forget the Season 3 and march forward. While it does paint a very disappointing and yet times discomforting picture for most part, it does push Carmen’s journey few steps forward. For now, The Bear Season 3 could have been better and to those who would like to watch it, be cautious in keeping any expectations.
