Kiran Rao’s critically acclaimed film Laapataa Ladies has been officially selected as India’s entry for the Oscars 2025, and to make it more accessible to a global audience, the film has now been rebranded with a new title— “Last Ladies”. This rebranding is part of a broader campaign aimed at boosting the film’s visibility in the international film community, particularly with the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
As part of the Oscars campaign, a special screening of Last Ladies was held in New York, organized by renowned chef Vikas Khanna, where both Kiran Rao and actor-producer Aamir Khan were in attendance. Khanna shared his appreciation for the film, calling it “brilliant,” and emphasizing its universal appeal. The event marked a key moment in the film’s promotional strategy as the team aims to connect with international audiences and key Oscar voters.
Aamir Khan, who produced Last Ladies, reflected on his past experience with the Oscars, where his film Lagaan was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002. Speaking about the Oscars campaign, Aamir shared insights into the process, saying, “Back in 2002, we went all out to make Lagaan noticed. We served tea and biscuits to the Academy members after screenings to create a more personal connection. While some may think extravagant gifts or promotions can help, the real focus should be on getting the film in front of the right people. We need to ensure that Last Ladies reaches the Oscar committee and global film lovers.”
