Vi Anand has been one of the filmmakers who tries to grab attention with his novel ideas. But those ideas haven’t always been converted to big screen as enjoyable films. He has joined hands with Sundeep Kishan after their film, Tiger. Their movie Ooru Peru Bhairavakona released on 16th February 2024. Let’s discuss about the movie in detail.
Plot:
Basava Lingam(Sundeep Kishan) completes a theft by performing a fire stunt. He escapes with bride’s jewels and her father adamantly asks his men to catch him and recover the jewels even though bride says, let the theif have the jewels. We understand that Basava Lingam is a stuntman and his speciality is performing fire stunts. His friend, John(Harsha Chamudu) helps him and on the way, they try to help Geetha(Kavya Thapar) who lies lifeless after an accident. John asks Basava to ditch Geetha and but he remembers his lady love, Bhoomi(Varsha Bollamma) and asks him to just cooperate.
Later, at one police check post due to John’s dumb answer, they almost get caught. Basava cleverly deceives them and finds a route to Bhairavakona. As he enters the village, he finds everything strange and ghastly. In order to help nurse Geetha’s wounds, they find a doctor(Vennela Kishore). Taking an opportunity to escape, Geetha runs away with the jewels but looses them to other thieves. In trying to find the jewels, they meet Peddamma(Vadivukkarasi). She calls Basava by name and this shocks him. Why? Who is she? What is this Bhairavakona? Watch the movie to know more.
Analysis:
Characters created by Vi Anand have a distinctive feature. They seem to have been drawn from mythology, at least, their names, but then Vi Anand, ends the parallels just there. The ideas are bright, the content is unique and the infusion of mythology with current world is also appreciable. But then everything needed a cohesive screenplay that holds every other aspect like a glue. Also, the scenes needed much more refinement and connection between the other. Some feels like the writer had few ideas and director had few other and the marriage between them did not happen like a holy union but appeared to be a forced one. This brought down the impact of the noble intentions that characters have as well.
The ideas behind creating a hell on earth and souls from other realm being asked to relive their trauma again and again is fine. But the purpose behind that torture and the actual purpose that this setting fulfills did not come out as anticipated. Movie story is about souls but it lacks the very fabric, soul. It feels random and script seems to have been written as the writers figured out what satisfies the premise with few ideas laid out. Had it could all come together in a river like flow, the movie would have been smooth sailing on a river during a calm winter evening. Rather it just feels like ideas being put together on editing table to make some sense of it all.
Sundeep Kishan is good but he needs much more meat in the character to really shine. It felt a little jarring to see him giving it all but then being crushed by underwhelming material yet again. Varsha Bollamma is good but again her character lacks the depth to appear as a character. All others don’t leave any impact even though they did well. Vi Anand yet times creates caricatures rather than characters to fit his ideas and maybe that is hurting his overall vision to fully be realised on screen. The technical values are good for a movie with limited budget and one song from Shekhar Chandra is lovely. Still, overall movie lacks the impact to really shine.
