Mani Ratnam Accepts Thug Life Failure, Stays Honest With Fans

Celebrated director Mani Ratnam has openly addressed the disappointing response to his latest film Thug Life, which featured iconic actor Kamal Haasan. The film, which released earlier this month, was one of the most awaited projects of the year, as it reunited the famous duo nearly four decades after their legendary film Nayagan.

However, Thug Life did not live up to the hype. Audiences and critics were left underwhelmed, with many pointing to weak storytelling and lack of emotional impact. Speaking in a recent interview, Mani Ratnam shared his thoughts on the film’s failure and offered an apology. “For those who expected another Nayagan, I am truly sorry. We wanted to do something new, not repeat what we had already done,” he said.

Critically failed Thug Life director Mani Ratnam explained that the disappointment came not from too much excitement, but from a different kind of expectation. Viewers were looking for something familiar, while Thug Life aimed to take a new path.

This honest approach is not new for Ratnam. He has always been open when his films didn’t strike the right chord. He had earlier accepted the lacklustre response to his romantic drama Kaatru Veliyidai, starring Karthi and Aditi Rao Hydari. He never shied away from admitting when a film didn’t connect with fans.

Despite the recent setback, Ratnam is already focused on the future. He has begun writing his next script, showing once again his determination to move forward. Known for bouncing back with powerful stories, fans still trust his vision and eagerly await what he will create next.
