Lokesh Kanagaraj may have directed only a handful of films, but his rise in South Indian cinema has been nothing short of remarkable. Starting his career with Maanagaram, the director found a breakthrough with Kaithi, starring Karthi. The film’s success not only changed his career trajectory but also earned him the opportunity to work with top stars, including Vijay in Master.

Lokesh Kanagaraj has since built a reputation for creating the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), linking his films through recurring characters and storylines. This ambitious approach introduced South Indian cinema to its own connected universe, generating huge anticipation for each of his upcoming projects.
However, his recent outing Coolie with superstar Rajinikanth turned out to be a standalone film, breaking away from the LCU format. Despite high expectations, the film did not quite deliver the level of success fans were anticipating.

Now, Lokesh has officially confirmed that his next project will be Kaithi 2, the much-awaited sequel to the 2019 blockbuster. Fans had long speculated about the follow-up, and the director has finally put an end to rumours by clarifying that the film is indeed his priority. Meanwhile, reports suggest that the character “Rolex,” introduced in Vikram, might feature in a separate standalone film rather than being integrated into the LCU. This decision has sparked curiosity among audiences, as many expected the character to play a central role in connecting Lokesh’s universe.

Pre-production for Kaithi 2 is already underway, with filming expected to commence in October. Speculation had earlier suggested that Tollywood actress Anushka Shetty would appear in a key role, but industry insiders from Kollywood have dismissed those reports as baseless.

With Kaithi 2, Lokesh aims to take his signature storytelling style to the next level while continuing to expand his cinematic vision. Fans of the director and Karthi will be keenly watching how this sequel shapes up, particularly after the mixed response to Coolie.
