In a proud moment for Indian cinema, Kiran Rao’s directorial film “Laapataa Ladies” has been officially selected as India’s entry for the 2025 Oscars. The Film Federation of India announced this decision, bringing the film closer to the global stage. Featuring Sparsh Srivastava, Nitanshi Goel, and Pratibha in lead roles, Laapataa Ladies was released recently and has already garnered significant success.
Kiran Rao, who previously expressed confidence in her film’s potential for international recognition, stated in a recent interview, “I am certain that Laapataa Ladies will represent India at the 2025 Oscars. It is our collective dream that this film takes the country’s name to the prestigious Oscar platform.” This confidence has now materialized, with the film being officially nominated.
Set in 2001, the film tells the story of two newlywed women from rural India who get accidentally swapped during a train journey. This unique and compelling storyline, combined with the film’s cultural richness, has made it stand out. The project was produced by renowned actor Aamir Khan, adding to the film’s prominence.
Laapataa Ladies was also showcased at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last year, earning accolades for its storytelling and direction. Additionally, the film was screened as part of the Supreme Court’s 75th-anniversary celebrations at the Administrative Building’s C-Block auditorium, marking its cultural significance.
The film has also found recognition internationally. It won the Best Film in the Critics’ Choice category at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), further solidifying its position as a remarkable cinematic achievement.
With this official Oscar selection, Laapataa Ladies joins the legacy of Indian films striving for international acclaim, carrying the hopes of its creators and a nation eager to see it shine on the global stage.
