Satyadev has been giving good performances in each of his films. His script selection has some issues to be corrected but his honesty in performing in a character is laudable. He has now come up with a real incident inspired revenge drama, Krishnamma. Movie released on 10th May and it promises to offer a different experience even though it appears to be a revenge drama. Let’s discuss about the film in detail.

Plot:
Bhadra (Satya Dev) and Koti (Laxman Meesala), earn their livelihood through smuggling and selling marijuana for Prabhudas and Co. Their friend Shiva (Krishna Burugula), however, disapproves of their lifestyle and urges them to remain true to their principles. Shiva runs a printing shop and he encounters Meena (Athira Raj), one day. His good nature wins her over. As their relationship progresses, Bhadra finds himself drawn to a girl next door(Archana Iyer). But his love story doesn’t progress as anticipated as girl’s father can’t look past the fact that he is an orphan.

Krishnamma fails to connect with us as a story or with characters
Krishnamma fails to connect with us as a story or with characters

Meena understands Shiva’s relationship with Bhadra and makes him, her brother. The situation deteriorates when Meena’s mother requires medical treatment, and in desperation, they resort to illicit means to secure the funds. This decision triggers a series of events that completely overturn their lives. The remainder of the story unfolds the consequences of their actions and the transformative impact on their futures.

Analysis:
Filmmakers took inspiration from real life incident, Ayesha Murder. But the incident in itself is gut wrenching and a revenge drama around it needed much more emotional depth than what the movie offers. You never feel for Meena or Bhadra or Shiva. It feels like these characters are living in a realistic town and circumstances yet they are disconnected with us. The reason seems to be high inspiration that the makers took from Tamil fims like “Myna”, “Vada Chennai”, “Subramanyapuram”, “Nadodigal” and many more.

The characters in Krishnamma seem to be distinctive from our daily lives. Tamil filmmakers try to create moments that connect us with these characters and give them characteristics that we find amazing. Each character just looks like someone taken from a previous film rather than looking like a fresh one that compels us to know about their story. Predictability of the screenplay kills any kind of involvement as well. It feels like we have seen them “n” number of times and still things are happening as we know.

Satyadev is believable and good in Krishnamma

The incidents that needed to give us a shock value are handled very poorly and we don’t really get any kind of satisfaction with the conclusion. Satyadev is good among the cast. He has honesty to carry such characters but he cannot do all the heavy lifting. Athira Raj is good in parts but her character did not have any weight despite being the cog of this story. Rest all looked fine for their parts but did not really give a performance that compels us to root for them. On the whole, Krishnamma could have been a better film with better writing, execution.

Positives:
Satyadev’s performance
Athira Raj looks
Intention behind the story

Negatives:
Predictability
Draggy Narrative
Lack of compelling characters
A feeling of Dejavu

Krishnamma Movie Bottom-line: Ineffective and Too Slow
