Few Telugu Stars Shine with Dadasaheb Phalke Honour

Dadasaheb Phalke Award

Mumbai and Chennai became early centres of the Indian film industry, but only a few names from these hubs have entered the legendary list of Dadasaheb Phalke Award winners. This award, the highest honour in Indian cinema, recognises outstanding contribution to the film industry over decades.

Among Hindi cinema stars, only a select few have received this prestigious award, including Satyajit Ray, Raj Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Dilip Kumar, Shivaji Ganesan, and Asha Bhosle.

Telugu cinema has also seen some of its greats honoured. Producer B. N. Reddy became the first Telugu personality to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1974. Others include L. V. Prasad (1982), B. Nagi Reddy (1986), Akkineni Nageswara Rao (1990), D. Ramanaidu (2009), and K. Viswanath (2016).

In recent years, popular stars from different industries have also been recognised. Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth from Hindi and Tamil cinema, respectively, received the award. In Telugu cinema, megastar Chiranjeevi was honoured, leading fans to celebrate that contemporary heroes across three industries had now been recognised with the country’s top cinematic honour.

It is well known that such awards are often influenced by politics. Regional stars usually receive recognition only when there is support from the central government. Despite this, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award remains a symbol of excellence and respect for decades of dedicated service in cinema.

The award was established in 1969 in memory of Dadasaheb Phalke, who is regarded as the father of Indian cinema. Recipients receive a Golden Lotus (Swarna Kamal) medal, a shawl, and a cash prize of ₹10 lakh. Only a very few talented personalities have received this honour so far, making it a rare and highly respected recognition in Indian film history.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award continues to celebrate and preserve the legacy of Indian cinema, recognising those who have shaped the industry and contributed to its growth and prestige over many years.
