Director Sundar C exclaims he “failed in copy competition” with Telugu filmmakers

Sundar C complains that Telugu Movies even copied from his movies

Tamil Director Sundar C has been known for his comedy films and great entertainers over the past three decades. His first film released back in 1995 and gave hits with big actors like Rajinikanth, Ajith and worked with the likes of Kamal Haasan as well. His movies have been majorly known for being screwball comedies or “copied”, “inspired” from different languages.

Very candidly he accepts that he takes inspiration and changes them according to his style. Now, Sundar C made stunning comments on Telugu Cinema Industry and directors. In an interview with Vikatan magazine’s YouTube channel, he and actor Prashanth have been interviewed about their blockbuster comedy entertainer, “Winner” that released back in 2003.

The comedy scenes from the film, featuring Vadivelu have become popular meme materials. Vikatan organised a special interview as part of promotions for Sundar C’s upcoming Aranmanai 4, BAAK in Telugu, and they invited Prashanth to interact with the director, on this occasion. The director in the interview exclaimed that he “failed in fighting with Telugu directors in terms of copying”.

He said,” Before making Winner film, I saw Telugu directors have used scenes from my films without acknowledging me or my work. They literally copied or committed theft. I was so angry at them and entire Telugu Industry that I have decided to make a copy of the Telugu films. I told Prashanth sir, that our film is going to be scenes re-created from Telugu movies.”

Prashanth weighed in and stated that Sundar C gave him 10 DVDs and stated that this is our film. Sundar C continued to say that he improvised a comedy scene involving Vadivelu by making him tumble like a ball. Later he stated that he saw same scene being “copied” in another Telugu Cinema using Brahmanandam. Here he exclaimed, “I agreed my failure in copying like Telugu directors after watching it”,

He reasoned that he cannot top them in copying as they did not even identify that he copied from them and they used it as it is. Hence, he stated that he is a failure in that aspect. Well, in a very candid and jovial way, Sundar C, made “copy allegations” on Telugu movie makers and that too, when his Raashii Khanna and Tamannaah Bhatia starrer BAAK is releasing on 3rd May, all over in Telugu.

You can term it as “candidness”, “carelessness”, his typical “tongue-in-cheek humor” or even “unthoughtful” but him criticizing Telugu filmmakers about copying should alert our filmmakers and stop such “inspired copying” and show such people that Telugu filmmakers can be original and stunning just like they did with “Shiva” and “Baahubali”.
