Dining in cinemas sparks debate among moviegoers

A new concept introduced at a multiplex cinemas in Bengaluru has triggered mixed reactions online. PVR INOX has set up a full dining experience inside its cinema hall at M5 E-City Mall. The idea is to let audiences enjoy their favourite meals while watching films.

The theatre has arranged tables and chairs around seats, giving it a restaurant-style set-up. This move aims to attract more people to theatres at a time when streaming platforms are becoming more popular. However, the concept has not been welcomed by everyone.

Some netizens say this kind of model suits live sports screenings, not movies. “If people really want to eat, they’ll go to a restaurant. Why eat in a theatre?” wrote one user. Others feel it is part of a plan to keep middle-class audiences away from cinemas.

Many have criticised the multiplex chain, claiming it is focusing more on making money than making films accessible. Ticket prices are already high, and snacks at multiplexes are often expensive. “Meals inside theatres will only add to the cost,” one comment read.

Others raised practical concerns. Eating while watching a film can distract viewers and disturb the cinema experience. “You can’t fully enjoy the film when you’re more focused on food,” a movie fan said.

Cinemas have been experimenting with new ideas as streaming platforms grow. Monthly subscriptions, recliner chairs, and special memberships have already changed the movie-going experience. But this latest step seems to have created a strong divide between audiences who want affordable entertainment and those who enjoy luxury add-ons.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether other multiplexes will follow this model — or if the idea will backfire.
