The Telugu film industry’s festive release calendar may see a shake-up, as the much-anticipated film Dacoit faces possible delays in its Christmas release. Initially announced as the only major film hitting theatres during the holiday, the absence of Dacoit could open the door for other films to take its slot.
Balakrishna’s Akhanda 2: Tandavam was initially planned for an early December release. If shifted to Christmas week, it could enjoy strong box-office impact, especially given the high audience turnout from Christmas through New Year. The period is seen as prime time for cinema earnings, provided the film performs well.
Directed by Shaniel Deo, Dacoit impressed audiences with its first look teaser, revealing it to be a love story despite its action-heavy title. Originally, Shruti Haasan was cast as the lead actress, but she was later replaced by Mrunal Thakur. The film’s Christmas release target was set, but during shooting, lead actor Adivi Sesh suffered an injury. This has now made meeting the planned release date uncertain.
The delay is particularly significant because other production houses had cleared their schedules to avoid clashing with Dacoit. Without it anchoring Christmas week, there could be multiple films vying for the same dates, increasing the risk of box-office clashes.
Adivi Sesh, known for delivering unique cinematic experiences, has become a fan favourite, especially in the spy thriller genre. His earlier works have been both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. Sesh is currently working on two major films — Dacoit and Goodachari 2. While Goodachari 2 is locked for release next summer, Dacoit was expected to be his Christmas season offering this year.
If the delay persists, audiences and filmmakers alike will be watching closely to see which films seize the open Christmas slot. The final decision could reshape the entire December release lineup for Tollywood.
