Director Prem Kumar, who made the hit film ’96, has finished writing the script for its sequel. He completed the script in January 2025, but the film won’t start shooting right away. He has already signed two other films, so the sequel will only begin after those are done, likely in about two years.
One of the two upcoming films is with Vels Film International. The script for that project is still being written. After that, he will move on to another film. Only after finishing both will he start working on the 96 sequel. ’96 was a sensational hit love story, especially with Gopi Sunder’s heartwarming music.
The sequel will bring back Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha in their original roles. Both actors have been doing different types of films recently. Trisha faced criticism for her role as Indrani in Thug Life, although most of it was aimed at the film’s writing. Vijay Sethupathi has also been praised for taking up unique and challenging roles.
Prem Kumar’s recent film Meiyazhagan received a lot of love from both audiences and filmmakers. Directors like Amol Palekar and S S Rajamouli praised Meiyazhagan.
