Rohit Sharma has been appointed as Test Captain after Virat Kohli resigned. Jasprit Bumrah has been appointed as Vice Captain. Ajinkya Rahane has been dropped and Rishabh Pant has been seen as future captain. This is before 2022. But now, Rohit Sharma captaincy, at least, in Tests is under threat. India reached WTC Final but failed win it the second time too. Virat Kohli’s Test captaincy came under scrutiny, due to that loss. Rohit Sharma might also need to face the axe.
Virat Kohli, even though became most successful Test captain ever, could not win ICC tournaments. As his batting form also declined, he offered to resign as T20I captain. Rohit Sharma has been appointed as white ball captain. Soon, due to some high level politics, Rohit Sharma got Test captaincy too. Virat Kohli had plans to lead India till 2023 WC. But since, he has been removed as ODI captain, he gave up Test captaincy. Rohit Sharma has lost in WTC Final, ICC T20I World Cup.
While Selectors don’t want to change captain before 2023 50 Over ODI World Cup, they might think about Test captaincy. Rohit Sharma captaincy skills during WTC Final have come under scanner. His comments about preparation have also not sit well with seniors and BCCI officials. Post West Indies tour, selectors and BCCI want to look at younger leaders, say reports. Rohit Sharma might be asked to step aside from Test captaincy. MS Dhoni from 2008 till 2016 ran Indian team with his strategies and leadership skills.
From 2016 till 2021, Virat Kohli continued to run Indian Cricket in his own style. India failed to win at ICC tournaments post 2013 Champions Trophy. Hence, selectors chose Rohit Sharma with better IPL titles record as captain for Indian team in white ball cricket. Rohit Sharma needs a big ICC win, to change perception. Let’s see if India can win World Cup again as a host like they did in 2011.
