Rain and Bad light hovers over Australia on first day play of Sydney Test!

Marnus Labuschagne scored another half century and got out before Umpires decided further play was impossible. Usman Khawaja scored half century and is not out on 54 (121). Marnus Labuschagne scored 79 (151), giving Australia, a strong platform to score big. Australia ended the day 1 on 147/2 in 47 overs.

Traditionally, Australia is known for playing a Test on final week of the year and another Test, during first week of the year. They call these Boxing day Test and New Year’s Eve Test, respectively. Boxing Day Test is held at MCG, Melbourne while New Year’s Eve Test is held at SCG, Sydney. Australia has entered into Sydney Test with 2-0 lead over South Africa, after winning at Gabba and MCG, comprehensively. But rain played at spoilt sport at Sydney for Australia on Day 1.

Pat Cummins, Australia Captain, has won the toss and elected to bat first. David Warner (10) got out quickly and couldn’t perform the same way he did in his previous Test, his 100th. He scored 200 in his 100th Test and grabbed headlines. Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja have put on 135 runs before rain delays and bad light has hampered the day’s play. Anrich Nortje got 2/26 and among South Africa bowlers, he looked the most dangerous. South Africa would hope that their star bowlers Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje do well for them in this Test to keep themselves alive in World Test Championship. Australia would want to complete whitewash and confirm their spot in the WTC finals. If they win by 3-0, India will have to win against Australia in home series to qualify and most probably, it can be seen as a dress rehearsal for impending finale of WTC!
