India is playing in the Hockey World Cup as host looking to win the tournament, being conducted at home. India took on Wales at Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela, on 19th January. Akashdeep Singh scored two goals, Shamsher Singh and Harmanpreet Singh scored one each for India. While Gareth Furlong and Jacob Draper, scored a goal each for Wales. India won the match with 4-2 scoreline and kept their chances to qualify to Quarter-Finals, alive.
India has been placed in Pool D along with England, Spain and Wales. England won against Spain and Wales, mainly they defeated Spain with 4-0 scoreline and this helped them qualify to Quarter-Finals in top spot even though they have equaled India with 9 points. India won against Spain and drew the match against England. With this win against Wales, they have also secured 9 points.
But as England scored more goals than India, they have directly qualified to Quarter-Finals. India has to play cross-over match with New Zealand to qualify. In the match, Shamsher Singh opened the count for India in 21st minute. Akashdeep Singh scored twice in 32nd and 45th minutes. Harmanpreet Singh scored in 59th minute. Gareth Furlong and Jacob Draper scored in 42nd and 44th minutes to give Wales a chance in the game. India will be looking to win against New Zealand and move ahead in the tournament.
