ICC T20 World Cup has seen two great upsets with Namibia winning against Sri Lanka and Scotland winning against West Indies. Namibia lost to Netherlands and NED could end up as Group toppers in Group A. In the Group A, except for NED, Namibia and Sri Lanka are on 2 points with UAE losing all matches. On the other hand, Group B has all four teams on 2 points. Scotland is on top with best NRR, Zimbabwe, West Indies and Ireland follow them, respectively. ICC T20 World Cup has new format this 2022 and Associate Nations have made this first week more exciting with their sensational wins.
Scotland and Ireland match at Hobart had both the teams scoring huge. Another opener, Michael Jones scored 86 runs from 55 balls with the help of Matthew Cross (28), Richie Berrington (37), Michael Leask (17*), helped Scots to put up 176/5 in their 20 overs. Last match hero, George Munsey failed this time. Curtis Campher, the all-rounder of Ireland, took 2 wickets and scored 72 runs off 32 balls with bat to surprise Scotland and win the game. George Dockrell helped him with 39 runs off 27 balls. Ireland scored 180/4 in 19 overs even though they had a bad start. Campher and Dockrell came together at 61/4 in 9.3 overs and finished them in favor of Ireland. May be IPL contract awaits for Curtis Campher for sure.
In the next match, at Hobart, West Indies and Zimbabwe came to head to head. This one did not have same fireworks as the earlier match. Johnson Charles (45), Rovman Powell (28) and Akeal Hosein (23) helped WI team reach 153/7 in 20 overs. Apart from the mentioned three, 17 extras became the fourth highest scorer for WI. Sikandar Raza took 3/19 in 4 overs for Zimbabwe. Later, ZIM batsmen started chase on attacking mode but after Sean Williams fell for 48 runs on board, ZIM never recovered and Luke Jongwe (29) managed to bring some respect to the innings at the fag end. Wessly Madhevere (27), Ryan Burl (17), Sikandar Raza (14), Regis Chakabva (13) failed to convert their starts into solid scores.
West Indies pacer, Alzarri Joseph did not let ZIM batsmen to score freely and took 4/16 in his 4 overs. Jason Holder helped him in restricting Zimbabwe with the figures 3/12 in 3.2 overs. While many anticipated Scotland to win after scoring such a huge score, Ireland showed that they have capability to find great hitting all-rounders in the middle-order like Kevin O’Brien, in the past. West Indies pacers have put them in the competition after a shocking loss and before big boys get into the mix, Associate Nations are keeping ICC T20 World Cup, in the news.
