India has been going with cautious approach in the Powerplays as one of the openers has been continuously failing and again Indian openers did the same, hurting India the match. England Captain Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to field first. India captain Rohit Sharma seemed to be quite confident and planned for the day. KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma walked out to bat and KL started with a boundary on the first ball. Soon, he got out again putting pressure on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Rohit looked completely out of sorts while Virat Kohli continued to go circumspect at the start of his innings. Spinner Abdul Rashid bowled tighter lines and India batsmen struggled to milk him for runs. Rohit got out after scoring scratchy and timid 27 (28). His innings increased pressure on India more.

Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav again came together but SKY failed. He looked like getting into rhythm but got out trying to hit Rashid out of the park for 14 (10). Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya started put on a partnership under huge pressure as India just scored 75/3 in 11.2 overs, when SKY got out. Hardik Pandya took few balls to assess the condition and then unleashed his hitting prowess. Virat Kohli too changed gears but got out after scoring 50 (40).

England on the other hand looked to dominate from ball one. Jos Buttler unsettled Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh did not find movement or swing too. Alex Hales unleashed his brutal power against Axar Patel and kept hitting every bowler from India to at least one Six. Bhuvenshwar Kumar (0/25), Mohammad Shami (0/39), Ashwin (0/27), Hardik Pandya (0/34) did not even complete their full quota of overs and looked absolutely ineffective and bamboozled by England aggression. Axar Patel on a spin friendly pitch failed to contain along with Ashwin. Alex Hales scored 86 (47) and Jos Buttler scored 80 (49) winning England Semi-Final by 10 wickets. England scored 170/0 in 16 overs to leave India fans and players crying for another Semi-Final loss.

India Team Captain, Rohit Sharma speaking at Presentation, said: “Pretty disappointed how it turned up today. We batted well at the backend to get that score. We were not upto the mark with the ball, we couldn’t turn up today. It’s all about handling the pressure in knockout games. All these guys have played enough to understand that. These guys have played under pressure in IPL games, it’s all about keeping calm. We were nervy to start with, but you got to give credit to their openers, they played really well. I thought it swung a bit in the first over, but not from the right areas. We know the runs are scored square off the wicket, we were aware about it. When we won the first game, it showed a lot of character. The game against Bangladesh, it was a tricky one. I thought we held our nerve and kept executing our plans. Couldn’t do that today.”

Winning Team England Team Captain, Jos Buttler said, ” I think the character we have shown since then, it has been great. We came here very excited, there was a very good feeling. Everyone from 1 to 11 – stood up today. We always want to start fast and aggressive. Rashid was batting at 11, that’s incredible to know that we have such depth. Hales used the dimensions well and he has shown his form. He was brilliant today. It’s important to enjoy this, it was a brilliant performance from us. I think we need to give special credit to Jordan, to bowl 3 overs at the death coming into the semi-final, it was a tough job. He handled the pressure towards the end pretty well, especially bowling against a world class player like Hardik Pandya.”

Alex Hales won the Player of the Match Award and he said, “It will be right up there for sure (referring to a perfect innings). Huge occasion, India in a semifinal of a World Cup, really happy with the way I played and it is as special as it gets. This is one of the best grounds to bat in especially in the powerplay, a really good surface and great value for good cricket shots, this is a ground I have good memories of and enjoy batting here. I never thought I would play in a World Cup again, so to get the chance is a very special feeling, in a country (Australia) that I love and spend a lot of time in, tonight is one of the best night’s of my career. Jos was unbelievable.”
