ICC T20 World Cup has witnessed a shocking start but then the end for Group A has been how everyone anticipated always. Sri Lanka won their match against Netherlands and topped the group. On the other hand, Namibia lost to UAE and had to exit ICC T20 World Cup with a huge heartbreak after creating biggest sensation, by winning against SL. Now, Group B matches will be interesting as every team stands on 2 points. From 23rd October, Group 1 and Group 2 with all big teams like India, Pakistan, Australia, England, New Zealand start their fight for ICC T20 World Cup.
At Geelong, Sri Lanka and Netherlands took on each other with winner qualifying to Super 12 and topping the group. Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. Opener Kusal Mendis made 79 from 44 balls to take the score to 162/6 in 20 overs. Charith Asalanka (39) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (19) helped Kusal in constructing the innings. Netherlands started the chase with Max O’Dowd going after Sri Lanka bowlers. But he did not get much support from others except for Scott Edwards (21). Max O’Dowd remained not out with 71 runs from 53 balls and played key role in NED scoring 146/9 in the chase. Sri Lanka won by 16 runs and qualified to Super 12 as A1 in ICC T20 World Cup.
In the next encounter, UAE and Namibia took over each other. Namibia needed to win this match to qualify and they would have topped the table above Sri Lanka due to their Net Run Rate. Namibia fought hard to win but UAE managed to sneak ahead even though David Wiese (55), Ruben Trumpelmann (25) tried their best. UAE scored 148/3 in 20 overs and all their batsmen – Muhammad Waseem (50), Vriitya Aravind (21), Chundangapoyil Rizwan (43) and Basil Hameed (25) batted well. Mainly, Rizwan and Hameed propelled UAE score with late flourish. Namibia did not get a good start in all-important chase and from 7/69, David Wiese and Ruben Trumpelmann brought them close to target at 141/8. UAE managed to sneak a win with 2 runs and eliminated Namibia with them from ICC T20 World Cup.
Sri Lanka and Netherlands have topped the Group A and will participate in ICC T20 World Cup as part of Super 12. Both will join Group 1 and Group 2 in the Super 12 stage and on 21st October, Hobart matches will decide the fate of Group B teams like West Indies, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Scotland.
