ICC T20 World Cup has seen many upsets and shocking results. One more has been added to them as Netherlands beat Zimbabwe at Adelaide. Netherlands lost to Bangladesh, India and Pakistan in this tournament already and they hoped to pull off a resounding win against Zimbabwe to earn themselves respectable exit as they would face South Africa in their next fixture. Zimbabwe wanted to pull off a huge victory to keep their chances in the tournament alive after their famous win against Pakistan. But Netherlands shocked them and eliminated Zimbabwe from the World Cup.
Zimbabwe elected to bat first after winning the toss and Netherlands bowlers did not allow batsmen to dominate the powerplay. Fred Klaassen (1/17), Paul van Meekeren (3/29), Brandon Glover (2/29), Logan van Beek (2/17), Bas de Leede (2/14) bowled tight lines and controlled Zimbabwe batsmen from exploding. Men in form Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza managed to put up a partnership of 48 runs in quick time but they could not really carry on to hurt Netherlands. Sean Williams scored 28 runs off 23 balls and Sikandar Raza scored 40 runs off 24 balls. Rest of them did not even manage to score in double digits and they scored 117 runs in 19.2 overs.
Netherlands came out to score 118 runs in 20 overs to get their first points on the board. Max O’Dowd and Tom Cooper (32) did not let any kind of panic set in the NED batsmen. They have put on a partnership of 73 runs for 2nd wicket in 9.3 overs, clearly making them the favourites. Max O’Dowd scored 52 runs off 47 balls and got out when the score is 109, when almost Netherlands win is confirmed. Bas de Leede (12) finished the game for a famous win for Netherlands in the World Cup, they won the game by 5 wickets scoring 120/5 in 18 overs. Richard Ngarava (2/18), Blessing Muzarabani (2/23) bowled miserly for Zimbabwe.
This win for Netherlands eliminated Zimbabwe from World Cup ending any remote chance of qualifying by winning the match against India, in their next fixture. South Africa (5), India (4), Bangladesh (4), Pakistan (2), Netherlands (2) are the table positions, respectively in Group 2.
