ICC T20 World Cup Super 12 Group 1 with England, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka in the mix, always seemed to be a group of death and with rain playing spoilsport, the group has now become highly interesting. Unexpectedly, Australia lost to New Zealand and England lost to Ireland.

Now, England needed to win their next two matches, the first one of them has been against New Zealand. No one expected New Zealand to top the group with a thumping win against Australia. England were on the verge of knock out if lost to New Zealand and they pulled off a 20 run victory.

New Zealand had to reply by maintaining 9 runs per run rate to win. In form Devon Conway (3) and Finn Allen (16) failed to give a great start. England pacers seemed to have an edge over New Zealand batters. Kane Williamson and Glenn Phillips came together to repair the innings and put them on the way to be chase the England total.

The pair scored 91 runs in 9.5 overs but Kane Williamson’s 40 runs off 40 balls attracted criticism for being too slow in a 9 per over run rate chase. Glenn Phillips showed his form and scored 62 runs off 36 balls. In the end, England bowlers proved too hard for NZ finishers to play and team won by 20 runs.

England with this win equaled Australia and New Zealand with 5 points and every team has played 4 games, each. Australia will face Afghanistan and New Zealand will face Ireland in their respective next matches. If matches won’t be abandoned due to rain, both should be able to put up 7 points on their name.

England vs Sri Lanka will be another knock out for sure in the Group 1. If unpredictable Sri Lanka manage to win against England, they have to depend on one match of Australia or New Zealand matches getting washed out to equal them by points. ICC T20 World Cup is still anyone’s game for sure as a competition but with strong Net Run Rate New Zealand might have almost wrote their name in the Semi-Final list and among Australia and England one will be going through with them.
