Henry Martin scored for Mexico after the defensive first half in the 47th minute to open the account. Luis Chavez followed it up with the second one in 52nd minute to seal the deal for Mexico against Saudi Arabia. For Saudi Arabia Salem Aldawsari scored in 90+5th minute to knockout Mexico from the competition even though they lost with 2-1 scoreline.
Mexico took 26 shots at goal with 11 on target. They had 61% ball possession, made 426 passes with 75% accuracy. Mexico made 18 fouls, got 1 Yellow Card, 6 Corners and 6 Offsides. Saudi Arabia took 10 shots at goal with 2 on target. They had 39% ball possession, made 287 passes with 57% accuracy. Saudi Arabia made 20 fouls, got 6 Yellow Cards, 2 Offsides and 1 Corners. Mexico needed to win against Saudi Arabia with at least two goals difference for advancing to Round 16 Knockouts. They conceded one goal to Saudi Arabia in the extra 8 minutes after play-time 90 minutes. Mexico lost to Saudi Arabia with one goal and SA could win against Argentina, eliminate Mexico at Lusail Stadium, Qatar.
From Group C, Mexico and Poland after their draw match, had to win against their other two opponents. On the other hand, Argentina came hard at their opponents after losing their first encounter against Saudi Arabia. Mexico lost to Argentina and they had to win against Saudi Arabia with two goals difference as they have conceded 2 and made 0 before the match, thanks to Argentina. Poland needed to make at least one goal against Argentina or lose with not more than 2 goals difference, if they lose and cannot win, to qualify above Mexico. Due to the extra time goal of Saudi Arabia, Mexico conceded 3 goals and made 2 goals, their Goal difference came to be (-1) and Poland managed to only concede 2 goals to Argentina and scored 2 against Saudi Arabia in their previous match.
Hence, Poland got the ticket to enter Round 16 knockouts while Mexico got eliminated, even though both ended up with 4 points. Saudi Arabia can be proud of their performance in FIFA World Cup 2022, as they won against might Argentina and knocked out Mexico, even though they did not win. Mexico will be heartbroken looking back at the defensive approach against Poland and lost opportunities against Saudi Arabia. This is almost like New Zealand losing the cup in CWC 2019 to England, due to boundaries difference.
