Dasun Shanaka helps Sri Lanka beat India in second T20I

India managed to score 190/8 in their 20 overs and Sri Lanka won by 16 runs. Sri Lanka won the second T20I against India and the series stands levelled at 1-1. Dasun Shanaka won Player of the Match and showcased good captaincy skills too for Sri Lanka.

India and Sri Lanka are playing T20I series and first one has been won by India. Sri Lanka won the second one as they got dejected for losing the first one after coming so close. They came back with vengeance in the second one and won against India by 16 runs in a high scoring thriller at Pune. India won the toss and elected to filed first.

Sri Lanka openers Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka gave a solid start against weak India bowling. Mainly, Kusal Mendis scored fast and completed 52 in 31 balls. He got out and Sri Lanka looked in trouble with struggling Pathum Nissanka (33 off 35) and lost Bhanuka Rajapaksa (2), Dhananjaya de Silva (3) cheaply too. Dasun Shanaka joined Charith Asalanka (37 off 19), who soon got out reducing Sri Lanka to 138/6 in 16 overs. Once they stood at 80/1 in 8.2 overs. Dasun Shanaka batted brilliantly in the final overs to push Sri Lanka score above 200 to 206/6 in 20 Overs.

India bowlers bowled No-balls and free hits that conceded more runs in the final overs. Umran Malik (3/48), Yuzvendra Chahal (1/30), Axar Patel (2/24) too wickets while Shivam Mavi went for 53 runs in 4 overs and Arshdeep Singh went for 37 runs in 2 overs. Both bowled multiple no-balls during Sri Lanka innings. India lost 5 wickets for just 57 runs in 9.1 overs. Ishan Kishan (2), Shubman Gill (5), Rahul Tripathi (5) got out cheaply reducing India to 21/3 and then Hardik Pandya (12), Deepak Hooda (9) tried to steady the ship with Surya Kumar Yadav but failed. Sri Lanka bowlers – Kasun Rajitha, Dilshan Madushanka, Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva, Chamika Karunaratne did not let India score freely.

Surya Kumar Yadav and Axar Patel, with nothing to lose went after Sri Lanka bowlers and scored fifties. They both have put on 91 runs in 6.4 overs. Both of them gave India hope that they can win against Sri Lanka even though they have to climb a mountain to achieve it. Suryakumar Yadav scored 51 off 36 and got out when it all seemed to go India way. Tide turned in Sri Lanka favour.

Axar Patel scored 65 runs off 31 balls and Shivam Mavi scored 26 runs off 15 balls. They brought India so close that they had to score 21 off final over to win the match against Sri Lanka. Dasun Shanaka bowled the last over for Sri Lanka, gave away 4 runs and took 2 wickets. India managed to score 190/8 in their 20 overs and Sri Lanka won by 16 runs.

He said, “To be honest, we would have done better in the middle part because the openers set us up well. Surya and Axar were outstanding, but still we managed to hold our nerve. It’s good to defend a total like this especially against India in Indian conditions.” Well, third T20I will be played on 7th January, 2023 at Rajkot.
