Champions England have won the World Cup in CWC 2019. They started bowling, batting and fielding aggressively after their loss to Bangladesh before Quarter Finals in 2015. Eoin Morgan has built the latest England side as an aggresive batting side. They started taking radical steps to score almost 500 in 50 overs match. It made them champions in 2019 and they looked almost invincible. But England has been effectively eliminated in CWC 2023.
In Indian sub-continent hosted World Cups, England reached finals only in 1987. England lost in Quarter-Final to Sri Lanka, who were not anticipated to win at that time. Sri Lanka went on to win World Cup against Australia. Later, in 2011, they lost to Sri Lanka in Quarter-Final as well with 10 wickets remaining. It is almost like India’s dominance against Pakistan in World Cups. Jos Buttler has expressed disappointment in their campaign. England did not prepare coming to this CWC 2023 like others. They seem to have very brittle middle-order and bowling, as well. Eoin Morgan knew 2019 would be happening in England and prepared accordingly. While they won T20I World Cup in Australia, they did not prepare for 50-over CWC in India.
England seems to not being able to prepare batters for slow tracks in Indian sub-continent from past two decades. They won Test series against India and in 2011, they also made great strides. But England seems to be falling behind in World Cup in India. Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Mark Wood have been big part of IPL but still, they did not seem to be prepared completely. Let’s see if they can come back in next 4 matches. They are taking on India on 29th October, in Lucknow.
