Australia have been the most consistent winners of World Cup tournaments. They have been able to dominate every team in 2003 and 2007. They won for the first time in 1987 in Sub-continent and now, they won on Indian soil. In 2015, they won on Australian soil and in 1999, they won in England. In CWC 2023, they started with losses and every player seemed out of form. But they ended it as Champions.
Before starting this tournament, they faced losses against South Africa and seemed highly under pressure to perform. Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith, needed to play the spin better but they did not perform at their best. David Warner and Glenn Maxwell gave them the belief to fight against circumstances. Travis Head’s addition has helped them get better and consolidated starts to the innings.
They grew in the tournament to a stage where many experts felt, they are the only team that could challenge invincible India. They did exactly that. Pat Cummins, Australia captain, already stated that they want to silence Indian crowd on the final day. They did exactly that. Australian captain won the toss and elected to bowl first. India got a dream start as usual with Rohit Sharma taking on bowlers.
Soon, Shubman Gill(4) fell for a false shot. Rohit continued to dominate and Virat Kohli with 3 consecutive boundaries showed intent. But Rohit Sharma(47) fell trying to be over aggressive against Maxwell for a great catch by Head. Immediately, Shreyas Iyer(4) fell in Pat Cummins bowling. Still, India looked strong with 81/3 on board. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli became over defensive. Majorly, Rahul failed to rotate strike freely.
India did not hit boundaries for more than 11 overs and in whole 40 overs post Rohit got out, they scored only 4 boundaries. Rahul scored 66 off 107 balls and Kohli got out for 54. Suryakumar Yadav couldn’t come to grips with situation and India only managed a meagre 240 all-out in 50 overs. But many thought Indian bowling will make it tough for Australia to chase the total.
Mitchell Starc(3/55), Pat Cummins(2/34), Josh Hazlewood(2/60), Glenn Maxwell(1/35), Adam Zampa(1/44) took wickets. In the chase, Travis Head and David Warner found it hard to make runs against Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. Both the bowlers took 3 wickets in 10 overs for 47 runs. Head took it upon him to keep the scoring at a pace on one side. Marnus Labuschagne without worrying about score absorbed pressure like a Test innings.
Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne(58) have put together 192-run partnership and given heart-break to Indians. Travis Head became Player of the Match with 137 runs in 120 balls. Australia won by 6 wickets with 241/4 score in 43 overs. Jasprit Bumrah(2/43), Mohammed Shami(1/47) and Mohammed Siraj(1/45) took wickets. With this win, Aus have become 6th time World Champions. Congratulations to them.
