CSK has ended IPL 2022 at ninth spot. Now, in IPL 2023, they have marched into the Final. CSK have overpowered GT for the first time in IPL, after the team formation. On the night, they needed to beat GT, they did just that at Chepauk. CSK has won against GT for the first time in IPL against GT with 15 runs.
GT have won the toss and elected to field first. In the Qualifier 1, GT decided to go with their success formula of chasing. Ruturaj Gaikwad found a lucky break as the ball he got out has been called no-ball. Young Darshan Nalkande stepped over. Ruturaj Gaikwad went on to score 60 from 44 balls. Devon Conway scrapped through 40 runs off 34 balls. CSK managed to get 87 runs partnership for first wicket and in the end that made difference. Ravindra Jadeja(22), Ambati Rayudu and Ajinkya Rahane 17 each. The cameos helped CSK to score 172/7 in 20 overs.
In the defence, CSK found MS Dhoni at his best captaincy form. He managed to find right bowlers and field placements to take wickets at key times. Shubman Gill scored 42 runs off 38 balls and tried his best against CSK bowling. Rashid Khan scored 30 off 16 balls in the end and gave CSK heart attacks. Deepak Chahar(2/29), Maheesh Theekshana(2/28), Ravindra Jadeja(2/18) bowled well for CSK. Matheesha Pathirana(2/37) and Tushar Deshpande(1/43) gave away runs in the end.
CSK bowled out GT for 157 in 20 overs. CSK gave away too many wides as Matheesha Pathirana has been slightly erratic due to the pressure of Qualifier. Still, they have marched into 10th Final in 14 IPL seasons they played. MS Dhoni is playing his 11th Final in 16 IPL seasons. He will be captaining CSK into their 10th Final on 28th May.
